What is generative AI?
AI that creates new content — text, images, audio, video or code — from a prompt, instead of just sorting or scoring data that already exists.
Older AI was mostly discriminative — it sorted things into buckets: spam or not, cat or dog, approve or decline. Generative AI flips that job around: give it a prompt and it produces something new that didn't exist before.
One kind of system, many kinds of output — that breadth is exactly what “generative” means.
Under the hood it's still prediction — the next token for text, the next step of denoising for images — running on a huge foundation model. ChatGPT (text) and diffusion image tools are all generative AI wearing different clothes.
