Lesson 5 of 6
AI Fluency: the 4D framework
7 min read
Two people use the same AI tool. One gets mediocre answers and quietly gives up. The other gets sharp, reliable work out of it. Same tool — what's the difference?
Four habits, not one trick
The difference is AI Fluency — and it isn't a secret prompt. Anthropic breaks it into four habits, the 4Ds: Delegation, Description, Discernment, and Diligence. Together they turn a chat box into a dependable co-worker.
AI Fluency is four habits working together: choose the task, describe it well, judge the output, and use it responsibly.
How the four fit together
They run in order, every time. Delegation: decide what to hand over. Description: tell it clearly what you want. Discernment: judge what comes back. Diligence: use it responsibly and own the result. Skip one and quality drops — a great prompt with no discernment still ships a confident error.
The four Ds aren't a menu — they're a loop you run on every task, from handing it over to owning what goes out.
You've already practiced all four in this course: Delegation (invite it to the table), Description (a clear brief), Discernment (verify before you rely), and Diligence (keep data safe).
The shape of it
- —Delegation — decide what to hand to AI and what to keep yourself.
- —Description — tell it clearly: context, role, format, constraints.
- —Discernment — judge the output; spot the confident-but-wrong.
- —Diligence — use it responsibly, protect data, own the result.
AI drafted a client proposal. Which of the 4Ds tells you to check the facts and tone before sending?
