Lesson 6 of 6
Reading the field
4 min read
A new model just 'changed everything', says the headline. You've now got the tools to read that calmly. So — what's the level-headed take?
You can read the field now
The AI news cycle runs on breathless launches and leaderboard bragging. With the landscape in hand, most of it decodes fast: which lab and family is this, is it open or closed, what does its leaderboard claim really cover, and what did it cost in compute? Those four questions turn hype back into information.
A field-reading checklist
- —Which lab and family? (Track the family, not the version decimal.)
- —Open or closed weights? (Rent convenience, or own control.)
- —What does the benchmark actually cover — and is it your task?
- —What direction does this fit — agents, multimodal, cheaper, on-device?
You don't need to predict AI — you need a map to place each new thing on.
Next time a model 'beats all rivals', run the checklist. Ninety seconds of these questions beats an hour of hype.
A headline says a new model 'beats every rival on the top benchmark'. The level-headed read?
