Lesson 7 of 8
Your data & privacy
5 min read
Where do your AI conversations go after you close the tab? Often: kept for a while, maybe used to improve the model, maybe remembered for next time. The good news — much of that is yours to control.
Three switches worth knowing
Most assistants expose three controls: whether your chats train the model, whether it remembers you across sessions, and a temporary chat mode that keeps nothing. Flipping them changes exactly where your words end up.
Privacy isn't all-or-nothing — it's a few settings that decide what's kept.
Match the setting to the moment
For anything sensitive — health, finances, work under NDA — turn training off and use a temporary chat. For everyday help, memory can be genuinely useful. The point isn't to hide everything; it's to choose, rather than leaving it on by default.
Decide what's kept on purpose — the defaults were chosen for the product, not for you.
Before a sensitive chat, check the assistant's data controls once and set them the way you want — it takes a minute and lasts.
Owning your data
- —Chats can train the model, be remembered, or be saved to history.
- —Training-off plus temporary chat keeps a session private.
- —Set the controls to match how sensitive the topic is.
