Lesson 5 of 7

Beyond the big three

6 min read

Once you're past ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, the names multiply — Perplexity, Copilot, Grok. Are they just more of the same, or something genuinely different?

Not every AI is a chatbox

Some tools take the same kind of model and wrap it in a different shape. A search-first assistant answers from the live web with citations. An in-your-apps copilot lives inside your editor or documents. A real-time one drinks from the social firehose. Same engine, very different front door — and the front door is the point.

The model matters less than the shape wrapped around it. A search-first tool beats a bigger general chatbot when your question is 'what's true right now?'

Match the shape to the job

So don't ask 'which AI is best?' — ask 'what shape does this job want?' Need fresh facts with sources? Reach for search-first. Editing a document? A copilot that lives in it. Just thinking out loud? A general chat. The winner changes with the task, and knowing the shapes means you always have the right door.

Pick the tool whose shape fits the job in front of you — a research question and a coding task want different front doors, even on the same underlying model.

Shapes blur: general chatbots now search the web too, and search tools now chat. Treat the shape as what a tool is built around and best at — not the only thing it can do.
