Lesson 5 of 8

Memory & personalization

6 min read

You open a fresh chat and it already answers like it knows you — your diet, the way you like things. You didn't say any of that here. Handy… but who's in charge of what it remembers?

It remembers what matters to you

By default, each chat is a blank page. Personalization changes that: Gemini can keep a small store of facts about you — that you're vegetarian, that you love the outdoors, how you like replies — and quietly use them in new chats, so you're not re-introducing yourself every time.

Saved preferences live outside any one chat, so a brand-new conversation can still start knowing what matters to you.

You're in control

This isn't a black box. You can see everything it has saved, switch individual facts off, or turn personalization off entirely. Treat it like a notebook Gemini keeps about you — one you're allowed to open, read, and edit whenever you like.

Convenience has a cost: what it remembers, it can also use later. Check the saved list now and then, and clear anything you'd rather it forgot.

Personalization can pick up more than you expect from an offhand line. For anything sensitive, turn it off for that chat — or review the saved list afterwards and delete it.

The shape of it

In a new chat, Gemini suggests a vegetarian brunch though you never said so here. Why?
